» Turner Contemporary Gallery, Margate

Following the roof-top handshake on 1 December 2009 between Councillor Michael Hill, OBE, KCC Cabinet Member for Community Services and John Durtnell to mark the topping-out of the Gallery, this project continues to move apace.

All underground services are in place and the main structure of the retaining wall to Fort Hill has progressed well. In terms of the gallery itself, the reinforced concrete external walls are finished, as are the ground- and first-floor slabs.  The steel structure forming the roof is complete.

Readymix concrete has been used for the walls and floor slabs, while pre-cast concrete floor beams, which give a high-quality finish to exposed areas, have been inserted over the multi-function rooms, the ground-floor gallery and the main reception area.

The final fitting-out and finishes are underway, with completion pencilled in for December 2010.  However, artworks –which will included a revolving exhibition of works by Turner – will only be placed within the gallery once the correct levels of temperature and humidity have been achieve.
